Let's Go Girls!

Savannah, GA Girls' Weekend

When your best friend works for an airline, birthday weekends tend to involve a trip of some sort. With the 25th celebrations being rather small due to the pandemic, her 26th called for something big. So, we all packed our bags and headed south to Savannah, GA. We ate, drank, and explored all the best picture spots all weekend long. Savannah is full of southern low country food and rich with history.

We walked the streets and admired the Live Oak Trees with the Spanish Moss on our way to Forsyth Park, a large 30-acre park with a beautiful outdoor restaurant, The Collins Quarter, where we had a quick drink and snack. To our delight, after our drinks arrived a local band started playing. People were spread out all over the lawn enjoying the afternoon. The Savannah College of Art and Design is by the park so there are different music performances and events most weekends and is a must on anyone’s travel list.

After listening to the band, we headed over to Starland Yard, a block that hosts local music, art, and rotating food trucks weekly. There is always pizza but then the other food trucks are on a rotating schedule, so check out their website to see what food you can expect before going. We were also able to try a variety of local beer on tap.

I hope you enjoy the delicious eats, drinks, and beautiful sights as much as we did!

Coffee Shops:

Blends a Coffee Boutique – I had to work one morning, so I walked down the main street from our hotel and stumbled upon Blends. Hopped inside and they were jamming to the Mamma Mia soundtrack. Needless to say, I definitely stayed and ordered a cup of Joe. The super unique thing about Blends is you get to select the origin of the coffee/espresso (i.e. Brazil, Columbia, etc.) you want. The pastries are just as good as the coffee and they have an extensive breakfast menu. This was just a pit stop for me to get some work done before heading off to brunch, but I would definitely recommend checking out the breakfast menu.

The Coffee Fox – On our last day, we all needed a little afternoon pick me up while wandering through the shops, so we stopped in The Coffee Fox and grabbed a signature drink. We all opted for the Horchata Latte. The Mexican sweetened milk changed the game of a latte. Due to COVID we were only able to walk in and grab our drinks and not sit around and hang out, but the staff was super nice and provided a few great recommendations to us.

Brunch:

There are two sister restaurants: Common Restaurant and The Ordinary Pub. We ate brunch at both and they both offer a stellar bottomless deal ($15). We all opted for the bottomless mimosas at Common Restaurant

but we couldn’t resist the delicious looking cocktails at The Ordinary Pub, I mean look at that Bacon Bloody Mary and Southern Dude cocktail. As for food you really can’t go wrong with anything on either menu. At Common Restaurant I had the Crab Cake Benedict, and the cheese grits made this the BEST. EGGS. BENNY. I have ever had. My friends had the Smoked Chicken and Waffles and the Waffles Caprese B.L.T. and they were just as happy as I was. For being sister restaurants, these two places had completely different menus which we

loved. At The Ordinary Pub we all ended up getting the Chorizo brunch skillet. It was not quite the dish we were expecting based on the menu description, but it ended up being delicious. Needless to say we will be going back to these restaurants next time we are in Savannah.

Breakfast:

Maple Street Biscuit Company – This was our breakfast spot on the last day. I

am not always one for biscuits, but they aren’t kidding when they say “Biscuits that WOW”. The biscuits are homemade inhouse and are super fluffy, warm, and delicious. Their coffees incorporate maple, too. I had the Bluegrass Grits Bowl with a biscuit and jam (also homemade) on the side and my friends had The Squawking Goat. The staff puts a fun twist on ordering and has a theme of the day. The day we were there, they asked us who our celebrity crush was and that was who they put our orders under.

Dinner:

If you love seafood as much as my friends and I do, then Savannah Seafood Shack is your place. The vibes of the restaurant are your typical southern low country vibes. There are so many different seafood combos available. We split The Love Shack with Shrimp and Crawfish and the Famous Low Country Boil. These were a delicious mix of different types of seafood and Cajun flavors.

Brewery:

Moon River Brewing Company – Who doesn’t love funny beer names (R.I.P. Current, Yoga Pants, Swamp Fox, etc.), and an outdoor brewery. The beer garden takes reservations for tables and fills up quickly on nice days and has a few benches and the bar for those that wander in.

Sightseeing Fun:

  • Pedal Pub – You can either reserve a whole bike or individual seats. There were 8 of us so we reserved individual seats and they paired us with another group which was super fun. The tour guides do an amazing job of telling you about Savannah as you go around town and there are special bar deals at each stop just for the Pedal Pub. Since we hadn’t been to Savannah before, this was a great opportunity to get to see the local establishments and decide which bars we would want to go back to later that night.

  • Plant Riverside District – If you haven’t caught on by now, there is a load of local talent in Savannah. Plant Riverside District is a newer area along the river with live music and entertainment, local shops and an outdoor beer garden. Grab a drink at District Seafood and listen to the music or admire the LARGE container ships pass through the river. Savannah is the third busiest seaport in the U.S. We were amazed at the huge ships passing through.

  • Chippewa Square – “My mom always said life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” If you were curious where Forest Gump recounts his life with his best friend Jenny, then look no further. The iconic movie was filmed in Savannah Georgia and the bus stop was at Chippewa Square. A fun fact about this area of town is that the traffic around the square had to be reversed for the bus to pick up Forest. The actual bench that Forest sat on in this park was a movie prop and can be found in the Savannah History Museum, but my friends and I had fun pretending we were sitting on the actual bench.

Finally, a few places that we did not make it to but hope to on our next visit:
  1. Tybee Island – Tybee is about a 25-minute drive from Savannah and is a cute little beach town.

  2. Ghost Tours – We had one picked out and ended up spending too much time in Forsyth Park, so we did not make it back in time. Savannah is supposed to be super haunted and there are a bunch of different kinds of tours. We were hoping to do the pub crawl ghost tour.

Thanks Savannah for giving us the ultimate girls’ weekend! Until next time!
